How to make farts smell better starts with what you eat and what maybe eating you. We all fart whether you like to admit it or not. In fact on average we fart 6 to 20 times per day.

Better smelling farts

Farts are a mixture of swallowed air while eating and drinking as well as from chewing gum and carbonated beverages. Farts are also formed from foods such as beans, vegetables and sweeteners such as xylitol sorbitol and fructose. Farts also comprise breakdown of digestion including bacteria fermentation. If everything is digested well then fart odor is really undetectable.

A healthy fart comprises nitrogen, hydrogen, carbon dioxide, methane and oxygen. Only about one percent of a fart contains hydrogen sulfide gas and mercaptans. When there is an unbalance of gas this may contribute to why farts stink.

If you eat a ton of cruciferous vegetables or, are not breaking your protein down properly may lead to a sulphur fart odor. Cruciferous vegetables contain naturally occurring sulfur compounds that in the body aid in detoxification pathways especially the P450 pathway. In other words the detoxification system is not working properly in the liver. If you consume a lot of fruit this too may result in sulfur odor as it interferes with proper detoxification. It doesn’t mean that in order to make your farts smell better stop eating these antioxidant powerhouses instead, work on enzymes, cofactors andbacterial biodiversity  to get the liver working optimally to break the compounds down that cause the embarrassing offensive odors.

What happens when farts smell really bad all the time?

When I used to suffer with Crohn’s disease, I had gas so bad I swear I saw the bathroom wallpaper curl.  I always had gas no matter what I ate or drank. There were times when the gas was so bad it felt like it was trapped in every cavity in my body. I tried every remedy possible and nothing worked. It was not until I worked on my digestion function and my microbiome was I able to reverse this rather smelly embarrassing situation.

You do not have to have Crohn’s to have smelly gas in fact there are tons of people who do not have any sort of diagnoses squeezing their butt cheeks praying one does not slip out.

How to make farts smell good starts by taking a look at our intestinal microbiome. Our microbiota are different kinds of bacteria that feeds off the food we eat. When our microbiota are in healthy numbers they munch down the undigested fibers and create many vitamins, antioxidants, minerals and short chain fatty acids that keeps our colon healthy and interact and communicate with our immunes system. During this process of fermentation hydrogen and carbon dioxide gases are released in the process however, in proper amounts we can handle.

When one or more bacteria groups grow out of control and the environment is perfect for yeast overgrowth this can lead to problems such as small intestinal bacteria overgrowth (SIBO), yeast over growth such as Candida and Helicobacter pylori (H Pylori) all of which can raise our gas output and prayer hoping no one is around when we let one rip.  We can also take in a nasty bug through food, improperly washing our hands and so on that can result in not only foul gas but a foul bowel; cramping, gas, bloating and diarrhea.

Bacteria are found throughout our intestinal tract however, the greatest concentration is in the colon and need the specific environment in order to thrive. SIBO happens when bacteria resides in the colon makes its way into the small intestine.  The environment is different and can result in gas that can be measured and detected in a gastroenterologist office. If positive the right course of action by your health care practitioner is how to make farts smell good once again.

If you or your client has low hydrochloric production, diminished digestive enzymes, missing a gallbladder and, or their appendix, this too may lead to smelly gas because the food is not being broken down properly by stomach acid, bile and pancreatic enzymes.

And, of course we must talk about leaky gut. If the intestinal tract is porous this can lead to food sensitivity and allergies that can result in offensive smelly farts. Primarily because sugars are not being absorbed and are feeding the bacteria that are then off gassing resulting in some pretty nasty farts.

Pay attention to gluten intolerance and Celiac Disease. These are two other conditions that can lead to an odor only a mother could love. Most people lack the enzymes to properly break down gluten. The distinct evidence is when the poo in the loo is sticky and although you flush, the poo sticks to the loo. This is basically partially digested proteins that have clumped together forming a sticky glue-like mass. In the case of celiac disease or gluten sensitivity there may also be signs of foul farts, bloating, abdominal distention and intestinal cramping.

How to relinquish the foul air?

Pay attention to what you eat and how your body is digesting. Keep a food and poop journal so you can spot patterns of increased gas production with certain foods such as dairy, processed refined foods, sugars and protein that your body may not be able to break down properly or, has a sensitivity to.

Add some digestive enzymes to help break down your food. If you or your client is over the age of 35 and/or, taking acid blockers they may need to supplement with Betaine HCL + pepsin to increase hydrochloric production. Eat more fermented foods and incorporate a probiotic. Eat foods high in fiber so you can feed the right friendly bacteria so it can bulk up your stools and decrease problems with constipation which, can also lead to not-so-nice fart smells.

How to make your farts smell better is not complicated but it does start with you. After all you are what you eat digest and fart do you agree?

As a graduate of one of the world’s largest heath coaching programs, I felt well prepared to coach clients on making life long changes to improve their overall health and wellness. As I began coaching however, it soon became clear to me that most of the people who were coming to ask me for advice, were people who needed more help than what I felt was within my scope of knowledge. Even though I’m also a Network Marketing professional, partnered with an excellent nutritional supplement company, and I am able to offer the highest quality supplements, I still didn’t have enough confidence that I was making the best overall recommendations. Karen’s Healthy Gut Advisor Weekend Intensive has provided the details that I needed to connect the dots. I am better able to help people understand what’s going on in their body, why, and what they can do to about it. On Monday morning after the Intensive, I contacted a client about something very important I learned which made a dramatic difference for her. I’m so excited to see how my future unfolds as I’m preparing to offer a Healthy Gut presentation to people in my community! Instead of being known as the health coach who sells vitamins, I’ll be known as the Healthy Gut Advisor professional to come to for overall health.
