Hi Karen! I have a question for you regarding probiotics. I was wondering if you knew of a probiotic with a high live culture amount (15 billion or more in one serving), has at least 10 strains of friendly bacteria, has a delayed release, and (the hardest to find) one that shows a good amount of potency of live cultures in the supplement at the end of the expiration? I’m having trouble finding this great of quality of probiotic and was wondering if you knew where to find this or have any good advice on the top probiotic. I have been struggling with IBS and finding the best probiotic out there for that condition.
Hi Christy,
Thank you for reaching out. I am going to go a little deeper then what you are looking for, because it seems there is some confusion when it comes to probiotics. Yes there is a numbers factor, but what is more important are the strains and how those strains are developed. It may not be necessary for you to have 10 different strains, when applying the right strains may be more effective.
I carry probiotics specific to the problem. I use human microflora products that deliver different strains of Lactobaillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum (sometimes along with fuctooligosaccharides) necessary for the growth of healthy intestinal flora.
I use specifically select human strains due to their hight natural tolerance to stomach acid
and for their ability to adapt to the intestinal walls. Researchers at the Scheffield School of Medicine found that randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled human clinical trials of Human MicroFlora significantly reduces total symptom levels of IBS.
If you are in an acute situation I use a formula that contains total 170 billion CFU’s with 3 strains: Lactobacillis acidophilus, 2 strains of Bifidobacterium, and fructooligosaccharides. If you are suffering with IBS and having symptoms that are not acute, I use an intensive formula containing total 36 billion CFU’s from 2 strains of Lactobacillis acidophilus and 2 strains of Bifidobacterium. If you are in maintenance mode with no symptoms I carry a formula with 8 billion CFu’s with 2 strains of Lactobacillis acidophilus and 2 strains Bifidobacterium, and fructooligosaccharides
I would also suggest having an IgG-4 food sensitivity panel done as well. With irritable bowel, the word itself means to become irritable from the wrong environment. Yes stress plays a part in IBS, however you can find almost complete relief by understanding your intolerances, removing them and then cleaning up your gut (which sounds like what you’re trying to accomplish. ) After you clean up your gut, most of the foods will no longer be intolerable, and you can add back in on a rotation.
I know this works because I no longer have Crohn’s disease, and ironically as I got better I went from Crohn’s Disease to Irritable Bowel to no signs of any intestinal problems. And I suffered for over 20 years. You can read more about Irritable bowel on my website here.
Christy, I think that what you need goes beyond just a probiotic, however what you can do is remove the top allergin/intolerant foods which are Gluten, Citrus, dairy, Milk, Eggs, Peanuts, Soy and Wheat and see if that helps. You would have to remove them for a period of at least a month and then add in one food at a time recording symptoms if any. You can find out more about how to do this here.
While you are giving your body a break I would recommend the Replete program to reinoculate for one month and then switch you to another one after that. There is a lot of research going on in the microbial world and you can read about that here and here.
A probiotic on it’s own is not going to give you complete relief but it will most definitely help. You really need to look at all factors though. Cleaning up and healing your gut and removing what is irritating you is really the key. It doesn’t matter what disease you are dealing with. When you take it down to a cellular level you will find that cells thrive off of what we are feeding them. This is why an IgG-4 antibody test would help and is a great place to start in getting relief from Irritable bowel Syndrome. Crohn’s Disease and colitis and other diseases.
Hope that helps and thanks for your question
Karen
